Personal Agent Protocol: Sierra and Meta's Open AI Agent Standard

Sierra and Meta unveiled the Personal Agent Protocol, an open standard for how personal AI agents sign in and act with businesses. What it means for your store.

Sierra, the company that builds AI customer service agents, announced the Personal Agent Protocol together with Meta on October 6, 2026. It is an open standard that defines how personal AI agents authenticate with businesses and what they are allowed to do once connected.

The announcement came in a blog post by Sierra co-founders Bret Taylor and Clay Bavor, and was covered by The Next Web and analysed by Constellation Research. The idea is simple: when a customer asks their AI assistant to check stock or change an order, that assistant needs a consistent and secure way to deal with the store's website or systems.

How the protocol works

According to The Next Web:

  • Sessions are built on OAuth, the familiar sign-in standard.
  • An agent can start as a guest for general questions, such as stock levels or a returns policy.
  • Once the customer signs in, they decide whether the agent gets read-only or write access.
  • A session can span channels, so a pre-login question and a later order change can belong to the same visit.
  • Businesses choose how agents reach them: through their website, through APIs using standards such as MCP and OpenAPI, or through the company's own agent.

Sierra says the standard is meant to handle authentication, give consumers control over their agents' access, and let companies see what personal agents are doing.

Partners and timeline

The named partners are Genesys, Instinct, Rocket, Shopify, Stripe and Walmart. A v0.1 specification is due later in October 2026. Payments, push notifications and more detailed permissions are listed as future extensions rather than part of the first specification.

The Next Web also notes that Shopify and Stripe have joined Visa's rival Trusted Agent Protocol, a sign that the market for agent standards is still taking shape.

For context, in June Visa connected its payments to ChatGPT so agents could buy from about 175 million merchants under its Trusted Agent Protocol, which Microsoft, Stripe, Shopify and Worldpay had already joined. Rocket's statement references Meta's Muse agent, which launched four weeks before the announcement and pays with saved cards through Stripe's Link. The Next Web also points out that software-approved payments made on a person's behalf raise regulatory questions in Europe, because strong customer authentication rules were written for a person approving a specific payee and amount.

Meta says the protocol is designed so agents like its Muse assistant can work with businesses to get things done. Constellation Research reports that Muse applies two checks before acting: would a reasonable person do this, and would the system hold up if every agent did the same thing? Analyst Larry Dignan wrote that the spec is early but could develop quickly, much as the Model Context Protocol did.

What this means for Saudi businesses

If the past decade taught businesses to be online and then mobile, the next phase adds a new kind of visitor: an AI agent that shops, asks questions and changes orders on the customer's behalf. Companies that handle this visitor in a structured way will be better prepared than those that do not.

Practical steps you can take now:

  • Make sure product, inventory and pricing data are well structured and available through reliable APIs, not only through pages that are hard to read automatically.
  • Review your returns, shipping and warranty policies and write them precisely, because agents will read them literally.
  • Separate read permissions from write permissions in your systems, and log every action taken by an automated party.
  • Consider your own AI agent that answers customers and their agents in Arabic and English.
  • Keep watching the standards: payments are not yet part of the protocol, and none of the named partners is from our region so far.

At Cortex Solutions we help retailers and companies build secure APIs, connect sales and inventory systems, and develop AI customer service agents, so the business is ready to serve both customers and their digital agents.
