Anthropic unveiled Claude Duet on October 21, 2026: an agent that monitors your apps, sends a daily brief and acts in the background, with approval first.

On Wednesday, October 21, 2026, Anthropic announced Claude Duet, a "proactive" AI agent that does not wait to be asked. It watches your connected apps, points out what needs your attention, and then carries out tasks in the background. The launch is a research preview with a waitlist, according to VentureBeat (a report by Carl Franzen) and MacRumors (a report by Juli Clover), both published the same day, and Anadolu Agency on October 22.

What does Claude Duet do?

According to all three sources, Duet sends a short brief every morning on the most important items in your connected apps, then checks them every few hours and sends an alert when something needs your decision. Users can adjust the topics it follows and how often it checks, although Anthropic notes that more frequent checks use up the plan allowance faster.

The agent runs inside a cloud virtual machine with its own browser. It works out which apps and steps a task needs, carries them out remotely, and keeps working after you close your laptop or turn off your phone. All interactions happen in one ongoing conversation, by text or voice, and it draws on the memory, skills and connected apps already in your Claude account, so setup is minimal.

Examples cited in the reports include preparing the morning brief, following up unpaid invoices, drafting customer follow-ups, scheduling meetings, building financial forecasts and even creating web apps. Duet runs on the Opus 5.5 model. Anthropic says it was built for professionals and small business owners who have too much to keep track of.

Integration with business tools

According to VentureBeat, Duet has access to more than 6,000 connectors and plugins through the Claude Marketplace. Examples mentioned include:

  • QuickBooks and Stripe, to review outstanding invoices and prepare reminders.
  • HubSpot, to use customer data when drafting outreach.
  • Docusign, to assemble agreements for review and signature.
  • Gusto, to prepare and run payroll, including hours, bonuses and reimbursements.
  • Shopify, to help set up and maintain a store.

Approval before action

Anthropic put the most emphasis on limits to what the agent can do. According to the sources, Duet can look at information and prepare drafts by itself. Before it sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document or deletes a file, it shows the intended action and asks the user to approve it. Anadolu quoted the company's announcement as saying Duet "checks with you before it acts on your behalf."

VentureBeat reported that some actions are blocked even with permission, such as securities trading and transfers between financial accounts. The agent does not see passwords or logins, and a dedicated classifier blocks the disclosure of card numbers and government ID documents. Users can disconnect any app at any time. The product was tested by internal security teams and an outside firm, and it is covered by a public bug bounty programme.

Availability and limitations

The preview is currently open only to Pro and Max subscribers in the United States, through a waitlist. It draws on the plan's existing usage allowance, and no extra charge has been announced. MacRumors said it is available on the web and through a standalone iOS app, while VentureBeat said it is also available on Android. It is not available on Team or Enterprise plans, and the company has announced neither an API nor a date for wider availability.

Anthropic acknowledged the preview's limits. Duet may misunderstand some conversations or misjudge how urgent an issue is. Users cannot yet see the browser the agent is working in, and monitoring is periodic rather than real time.

The launch puts Duet in direct competition with Meta's Muse agent and OpenAI's Dots agent, both announced last September, as the big AI companies race to build proactive assistants.

What does this mean for Saudi businesses?

Duet is not yet available in the Kingdom, but the trend it represents is clear: AI is moving from "a tool you ask" to "a colleague who keeps watch for you." Some practical lessons for business owners:

  • A proactive agent needs connected data. If your invoices, customers and sales are scattered across Excel files and WhatsApp groups, no agent will find anything to follow. Unifying your systems comes before AI.
  • The "approval before action" principle is a good model for any automation in your company: let the system prepare and suggest, and leave sending, paying and signing to a human decision.
  • The tasks Anthropic highlighted, such as chasing late invoices and following up with customers, are the same ones that eat up the time of sales and accounting teams in small and medium businesses. They can be automated today, without waiting for these products to arrive.
  • When you use any external agent, check where your data is stored and who can access it, in line with the Kingdom's Personal Data Protection Law.
